I am an artist and immersive experience designer.
My name is Carlos Garcia, though I create, perform, and exhibit work under the alias L05.
I am a member of Detroit-based artist collective Complex Movements, helping shape the sonic, visual, and narrative experiences as one of five lead artists and serving as the group’s technical director.
I come from a deep background of immersive experience design, specifically in the contexts of live performance, theater, large-scale installation, and virtual reality. I have also been programming for years, having an education in both computer science and sound engineering and working on everything from interactivity scripting to streamlining production workflows and rendering pipelines. I love building tools and creating with procedural techniques.
From 2012 to 2017, I lead creative research and design at the University of Michigan's Duderstadt Center, where I managed the GroundWorks Media Lab, helping develop and run the center’s studios and immersive spaces. I graduated with an MFA from UCLA's Design | Media Arts in June 2019.
I am a 2019 United States Artists Fellow, 2019 Eyeo Festival Curatorial Fellow, 2018 Santa Fe Institute Artist-in-Residence, 2016 Kresge Artist Fellow, and 2013 Creative Capital Grantee. I have also had work featured in publications such as Art in America, Vice Creators, The Fader, Complex, HowlRound, and more.
